U.S. Sheds 131K Tech Jobs in May, but Demand for AI Skills Surges

The U.S. tech sector lost 131,000 jobs in May, according to CompTIA’s analysis of BLS data. However, total IT employment remains positive for the year. Tech unemployment slightly declined to 3.4%, while national unemployment stayed at 4.2%.

Despite job losses, nearly 500,000 tech positions remain open, with strong demand for software developers, systems engineers, and cybersecurity professionals. AI-related job postings have surged 117% year-over-year, reflecting a growing need for specialized skills amid broader economic uncertainty. Nearly two-thirds of executives report that a lack of in-house AI talent is slowing down generative AI adoption.

HPE gains enterprise traction with private cloud, AI-powered servers

HPE reports strong enterprise momentum in Q2 FY2025, with a 6% year-over-year revenue increase to $7.6 billion. Growth was fueled by rising demand for AI-powered GPU servers and private cloud solutions, according to executives.

About one-third of HPE’s AI orders were driven by enterprise purchases of GPU servers, contributing to a $3.2 billion AI backlog. Enterprise customers are increasingly investing in on-premises infrastructure to support retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning, and inferencing, especially for data sovereignty and compliance needs.

As public cloud AI adoption accelerates, private cloud is also seeing a resurgence. HPE recently launched updated private cloud offerings, including HPE Private Cloud AI integrated with Nvidia’s platform. Competitor Dell also reported surging demand for AI servers and introduced its own private cloud suite.

HPE continues to focus on internal optimization, including workforce reductions and enhanced pricing analytics. The company is using agentic AI tools developed with Deloitte to cut reporting cycle times by 50% and reduce finance processing costs by 25%.

Broadcom Accelerates Private Cloud Push, Cuts Low-Performing VMware Partners

Broadcom has converted 87% of its top 10,000 customers to the VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) platform, helping drive a 25% year-over-year revenue increase in infrastructure software.

As part of its strategy, Broadcom is eliminating its lowest-tier VMware resellers to focus on partners with deeper technical capabilities.

Enterprise demand for private cloud is growing, with many firms repatriating workloads from public cloud to gain better cost control and security.

CLOUD TIPS
3 Keys to Cloud Migration That Drives Long-Term Success

A successful cloud migration isn’t just about moving workloads — it requires strategic planning. This analysis outlines three essential principles for a sustainable cloud journey:

  1. Embed security from the start – Security must be systemic, automated, and integrated across all cloud operations to reduce risk and meet compliance requirements efficiently.

  2. Manage operational costs continuously – Unexpected cloud expenses can derail success. Ongoing monitoring and optimization are crucial beyond the initial migration.

  3. Follow an architectural blueprint – A clear migration plan aligned with long-term IT architecture ensures scalability, smooth integration, and adaptability to evolving business needs.

Organizations that apply these principles position themselves for greater agility, security, and cost efficiency in the cloud.

CAREER GROWTH
Lessons from Earning the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer Certification

In February 2025, one cloud professional shared their experience earning the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer certification, highlighting what helped—and what didn’t.

While the exam isn’t highly specialized, it provides a strong foundation in Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The Get Certified program offered helpful labs and instructor-led sessions, though aligning study resources with exam content remained a challenge.

Key takeaways included:

  • Dan Sullivan’s book for conceptual structure

  • Aldovelio Castremonte’s practice questions for familiarizing with the format

  • Personal condensed notes for final review

The main lesson: build a structured, hands-on, and focused study approach to cut through GCP’s complexity and boost your chances of success.

PRODUCTIVITY
Simplifying AWS with MCP and Cursor IDE

A recent demo shows how AWS’s new Model Context Protocol (MCP), combined with Cursor IDE, can dramatically simplify infrastructure development. By connecting the two, a 65-line AWS CDK stack was reduced to just 12 lines.

In just 8 minutes, the video covers:

  • What MCP is, explained simply

  • A 2-step integration with Cursor IDE

  • Before-and-after code comparison

  • A bonus look at AI-driven cost estimation using AWS MCP

For AWS developers, this walkthrough offers a fast and practical way to streamline workflows and cut down code.
